A Thin Shell

A Thin Shell

$11.98

For about a decade, it seemed like there would never be a third album by Sweden’s October Tide, who recorded two albums in the 1990s (Rain Without End in 1995 and their 1999 release, Grey Dawn, after that) but were inactive during most of the 2000s. Then, in 2009, guitarist Fredrik Norrman surprised the extreme metal world by forming a new October Tide lineup without singer Jonas Renkse, who he knew from Katatonia and co-founded October Tide with in 1995. Recruiting singer Tobias Netzell, bassist Jonas Kjellgren (Scar Symmetry, Carnal Forge), and drummer Robin Bergh (formerly of Amaran), Norrman didn’t go for any major stylistic changes. In fact, 2010′s A Thin Shell pretty much picks up where October Tide’s 1990s recordings left off — and that means taking an approach that is as melodic as it is heavy. A dark, somber, melancholy atmosphere prevails throughout this 42-minute CD, which combines elements of doom metal, death metal, and black metal. Vocally, A Thin Shell is consistently extreme; death metal’s Cookie Monster growl and black metal’s sinister rasp are equally prominent, and clean vocals are nowhere to be found. But musically, A Thin Shell isn’t so extreme. For all its heaviness and aggression, A Thin Shell is actually quite musical and nuanced compared to most of the extreme metal that has come out of Scandinavia. Nor is it ultra-fast; while thrashiness and lightning-speed tempos are the norm in death metal and black metal, October Tide’s doom/death/black hybrid favors heaviness at a decidedly comfortable pace. In other words, A Thin Shell is death metal/black metal vocally but doom metal musically (even without the Black Sabbath-obsessed riffs that doom metal, like stoner rock, is known for). The end results are highly rewarding, if a tad predictable — and A Thin Shell leaves no doubt that there is life after Renkse for October Tide. ~ Alex Henderson, Rovi

Thin Places

Thin Places

$14.38

On his fifth album as leader — and his second for New West — wily Southern singer/songwriter Randall Bramblett keeps his cards close to the rock & roll vest, and cranks out songs that ring so large, they’re almost anthems. While there a thousand songwriters who deserve more attention than they get, it’s as a singer that Bramblett separates himself from the pack. His gritty, grainy, in-your-face delivery makes no apologies and takes no prisoners — he conveys emotion in every syllable. On Thin Places, he teams up with Nash Vegas producer and session bassist Michael Rhodes, and co-writes with mate Jason Slatton on more than half of the album’s 11 selections. Along with his regular band — which is a diverse unit of crack players who include guitarists Slatton, Kenny Greenberg, and Davis Causey, as well as drummer Shawn Pelton, while Rhodes handles the bass chores — Bramblett takes the country out of Southern rock, the hooks out of radio-friendly pop, and the roundness out of rock attack, and offers a smoking little record of songs that have at their heart a poetic intensity, an emotional delivery, and a rough-hewn grace. Standout tracks are the ringing “You Can Be the Rain,” the slow, raggedly beautiful shuffle “Nobody’s Problem” (which sounds like Crazy Horse fronting a band led by Delbert McClinton instead of Neil Young) and the shimmering midnight soul-fried funkiness of “Black Coat,” with Bramblett’s Hammond B-3 slithering through the mix with ghostly fills. The darkly swirling “Chet Baker” also makes its mark with gorgeous chord voicings from Bramblett’s piano. The languid pace of the track and its bubbling, subtly insistent rhythm track move the cut with beautiful atmospherics. Thin Places is a genre-busting album, one that is realized with confidence and plenty of heart. It is the mark of a mature artist at the peak of his powers of reining in the various forces at his disposal as a lyricist and as a tunesmith. As a singer he has passed his own high-water mark for emotional authenticity and sheer gutsy verve. ~ Thom Jurek, Rovi Performers: Ashley Cleveland – Vocals (Background); Land Philharmonic Orchestra – Strings; Mickey Raphael – Harmonica; Randall Bramblett – Harmonium, Wurlitzer, Harmonica, Organ (Hammond), Saxophone, Piano, Keyboards, Sax (Soprano), Vocals; Davis Causey – Guitar (Electric), Guitar (Acoustic); Jason Slatton – Guitar (Leslie), Guitar (Tremolo), Vocals (Background), Guitar (Acoustic), Guitar (Electric);

Thin Lizzy

Thin Lizzy

$7.98

Thin Lizzy were originally conceived as a power trio in the image of Cream and the Jimi Hendrix Experience, but Eric Bell lacked the charisma of these groups’ guitarists, forcing vocalist/bassist Philip Lynott to take center stage from day one. Despite his already poetic, intensely personal lyrics, Lynott was only beginning to develop as a songwriter, and the band’s unfocused, folk-infused early efforts are a far cry from their mid-’70s hard rock glory. Recorded on a shoestring budget, their self-titled debut is surprisingly mellow; many songs, such as “Clifton Grange Hotel” and “The Friendly Ranger of Clontarf Castle,” sound confused and unfinished. Quiet ballads like “Honesty Is No Excuse,” “Eire,” and “Saga of the Ageing Orphan” abound, while supposed rockers such as “Ray-Gun” and “Return of the Farmer’s Son” fall remarkably flat. In fact, Lizzy only bare their claws on “Look What the Wind Blew In,” a gutsy rocker that hints at things to come. Four bonus tracks (originally released as singles) were added to this CD reissue, and of these “Things Ain’t Working Out Down at the Farm” is quite memorable, while the mournful “Dublin” contains Lynott’s first great lyric. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia, Rovi Performers: Brian Downey – Percussion, Drums; Eric Bell – Guitar, Guitar (12 String); Ivor Raymond – Keyboards; Phil Lynott – Vocals, Guitar (Acoustic), Bass

Ballad of a Thin Line Man

Ballad of a Thin Line Man

$24.78

Howe Gelb was still sorting out what he was doing with Giant Sand when the band recorded its second album, 1986′s Ballad of a Thin Line Man, but while it’s still rooted in the same sort of rough-and-tumble neo-paisley underground rock as the group’s debut, Valley of Rain (released earlier the same year), it sounds a bit more like what Giant Sand would become than its predecessor. The opening cuts (“Thin Line Man” and a hot-wired cover of Bob Dylan’s “All Along the Watchtower”) set the mood with their frantic guitar bashing, their dramatic dynamics (“Thin Line Man” features a dramatic dubwise passage at the midpoint and “Watchtower” opens with a little more than a minute of fiddle scrapings and guitar atmospherics), and Gelb’s tough but quizzical songwriting and vocals. But the ambling acoustic tone of “Graveyard” and “Who Am I?,” the loopy piano plunking on “Last Legs,” and the folk-rock undercurrents of “The Chill Outside” offer clues that Gelb had musical ambitions that flowed in several different directions at once. The addition of Paul Jean Brown gave Giant Sand a two-guitar lineup on these sessions (though Rainer Ptacek, Gelb’s finest guitar foil, had yet to go into the studio with the band), and the raucous tone of Gelb and Brown’s guitar duels makes the band’s rock gestures significantly more exciting. And bassist Scott Garber and drummer Tom Larkins are a more solid and muscular rhythm section their second time out, even if these sessions still sound a touch chaotic. And while two high-profile covers are featured here — “All Along the Watchtower” and Johnny Thunders’ “You Can’t Put Your Arms Around a Memory” — this album is still a very clear reflection of Gelb’s musical mind and personality, and he fills both songs with his own spirit. Ballad of a Thin Line Man documents a band that hadn’t yet reached greatness, but was well on its way to something special. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi
